Original 4 Route Options

The process to identify the original four route options began with the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) reviewing various options to transport power from the transmission system in the Keephills/Wabamun area (west of Edmonton) to the northeast region of Alberta, including the Heartland area. Through a high-level review of land, technical and cost factors, as well as input gathered from a series of stakeholder consultation activities, the AESO identified two potential options involving the construction of a new transmission line to meet the need for the delivery of additional electricity to northeastern Alberta and the Heartland region. The Heartland Project Team identified and analyzed potential routes for these options:

- West side of Edmonton, both through the Transportation/Utility Corridor (TUC) and outside the city; and

- East side of Edmonton, both through the TUC and outside the city.
